Lavallette, New Jersey is a special place. Even though I may be biased, having grown up spending summers at the Jersey Shore, Lavallette, NJ, is the perfect beach escape from New York City and there are many memorable things to do!
The shore town of Lavallette is located on the Barnegat Peninsula, a barrier island less than 100 miles outside New York City. The borough of Lavallette, NJ is situated along the Atlantic Ocean and the town also has bay beaches on Barnegat Bay. What I love about Lavallette, New Jersey is that it’s a laid-back beach town with close access to thrilling boardwalks like Seaside Heights’ Casino Pier and Point Pleasant Beach’s Jenkinson’s Boardwalk. It’s also a modest town with a mix of luxury.
From the unofficial kickoff to summer, which is Memorial Day Weekend, to the unofficial end of summer, which is Labor Day Weekend, Lavallette summer tourists and beach homeowners flood this seaside town. There are many incredible restaurants, water sports and activities, a yacht club, boutique shops and entertainment.

When it comes to the weather at Lavallette Beach, NJ, during the summer season, you will experience clear, 80° (Fahrenheit) sunny days along with typical mild storms.
Temperatures at the Jersey Shore from June through August range from highs in the upper 80s° Fahrenheit to lows in the lower 60s° Fahrenheit. July is the hottest month when temperatures can get into the 90s° Fahrenheit. It’s also the month when it rains in NJ the most. New Jersey’s shore towns get an average of five inches of rainfall during July.

Renting a car is the best way to get around the Jersey Shore. It’s almost impossible to get around without your own vehicle. You can quickly get to Lavallette by taking the Garden State Parkway. The two famous exits to get off from the Parkway to Lavallette are Exit 98, the Belmar and Point Pleasant exit, and Exit 81, the Toms River exit.
Regarding public transportation, you can travel to Lavallette, New Jersey by taking NJ Transit. You can take the North Jersey Coast Line train from New York Penn Station, Newark Penn Station, Secaucus Junction and Rahway Station to Bay Head, Belmar, Asbury Park, Bradley Beach, Long Branch, Manasquan, Point Pleasant Beach, Spring Lake and more. From there, you can take a ride-sharing app to get to the beach or your accommodation!
NJ Transit bus services go from New York’s Port Authority Bus Terminal, Newark Penn Station and Jersey City’s Journal Square Transportation Center to Toms River, right across the Barnegat Bay from Lavallette.

History of Lavallette, New Jersey:
Believe it or not, Lavallette, NJ’s history is fascinating and one of the best things to do is to learn about it. Humans have been flocking to Lavallette for centuries. The first people who made their yearly spring migration from their inland homes to the coast were the Lenni-Lenape tribe. They would come to harvest different fish and shellfish. Once the barrier island showed signs of autumn, they would return to their primary homes.
Robert Juet, the first sailing mate on Henry Hudson’s “Half Moon,” was the first European settler to come across the Barnegat Inlet. It wasn’t until the mid-1600s that Europeans set foot in the area. The Dutch settlers were the first to establish villages on the mainland in the current-day Toms River.
The local ocean beaches remained uninhabited throughout the 18th century and for most of the 19th century. The Chadwick House was the first structure to be added to Lavallette. It was located near the current site of Ocean Beach Marina.
“Lavallette City by the Sea” was purchased by Michael W. Ortley and the Borough of Lavallette became incorporated in December 1887. The town’s name was honored by the United States Navy Admiral Elie A. F. LaVallette. The Admiral was of French descent but later anglicized his name to Lavallette.
Running from south to north, the original Lavallette consisted of a series of streets from Trenton Avenue to Ortley Avenue. A fun fact about Lavallette is that Ocean Avenue ran along the beachfront, now the town’s boardwalk. Additionally, a railroad ran through the town on the current-day Anna O. Hankins Boulevard, also known as Route 35 South. At the time, Bay Boulevard was full of coves and creeks.
In the late 19th century to early 20th century, a Union Church and a Yacht Club were established. The Yacht Club was on the beachfront, but today, it’s located on the bayfront. Lavallette’s first store was placed on the corner of Grand Central and Reese Avenues (Route 35 North). Most early residents settled around that area of Lavallette, which became the business district hub. The Fairway Hotel, which was Lavallette’s first hotel, was also built between President and Grand Central Avenues.
Lavallette became a small, family resort town between the 1920s and 1930s. There was a standstill in growth due to the Great Depression and World War II, but the town’s population exploded by the late 1940s through the early 1960s.

Lavallette is a quiet beach community. When you vacation at the Jersey Shore, the best type of accommodation to stay at is a rental home. Even though you can find many properties to stay at, they book up quickly for the summer months, so I suggest planning in advance.
If you prefer to stay at a hotel during your summer vacation in Lavallette, the two best ones in the area are Lamplight Motel between White and Kerr Avenues on Grand Central Avenue and the Starlight Motel & Luxury Suites in Ortley Beach.

Enjoy a Relaxing Beach Day on Lavallette Beach:
Lavallette Beach is one of the most beautiful on the Jersey shoreline. As someone who’s been to many beaches, I can confidently say that Lavallette has some of the best white sand in the world. It’s soft and easy to walk on. There’s nothing worse than visiting a gritty beach where the sand is almost like dirt.
Lavallette’s ocean beaches are separated into sections of three to four streets, ranging from Beach 1 to Beach 9. Not only can you sunbathe and relax on the beautiful beaches, but you can also swim in the Atlantic Ocean!
The best time for swimming in the Atlantic Ocean is between mid-July to mid-September, when the water boasts an average high temperature of 76° Fahrenheit. You can swim in the ocean from late May through early July, but it’s cold. Hurricane season in New Jersey is between June through November, but the ocean tends to be the roughest starting from mid-August.
There are lifeguards during the prime summer months, the middle of June through the beginning of September, but it’s always best to swim with caution and keep an eye on small children. During the 2024 beach season, Lavallette lifeguards will be on the ocean and bay beaches from June 15 to September 2. From Monday through Friday, lifeguards are on the beaches from 10 am to 5 pm. Saturdays and Sundays draw more crowds to Lavallette’s beaches, so lifeguards patrol from 10 am to 6 pm.
Please note that you must pay to visit Lavallette Beach during the summer. A beach badge patrol sits at the top of each street on the boardwalk. When you get to the beach entrance, you either show a badge or you can pay for a wristband if you’re visiting for the day. Every street in Lavallette, from Dover Avenue to Ortley Avenue, has its own entrance off the boardwalk. Please note that the entrance to each beach is ADA-accessible.
All Lavallette beaches are free for children under the age of 12 and for any veterans or active military personnel. A daily badge costs $13 USD per adult and teenager. If you plan to purchase a season badge, it costs $60 USD, per person, for a preseason badge through May 17, 2024 and $65 USD after that; $20 USD for senior citizens ages 65 and older and $35 USD per adult for just a week badge, Saturday through the following Saturday. The weekly badges are great for those who rent. All Lavallette NJ beach badges can be bought at the Municipal Building. (Keep in mind that even though Lavallette is a public beach, there are no public restrooms available!)
Some fun things to do at the Jersey Shore on a summer day are swimming in the ocean, boogie boarding, surfing and skimboarding. There are sections for each summer activity. If you don’t know what skimboarding is, it’s a thin board that glides across the water’s surface to meet an incoming wave break.
Additionally, the beach is excellent for yard game activities like corn hole, Can Jam, Spikeball, volleyball, paddle ball and wiffle ball. You can bring your own equipment onto the beach.
Please note that you cannot bring food or alcohol onto the beach, like pizza from local restaurants, hard seltzers, beer, etc. You can bring your own snacks like pretzels, chips, lemonade, Arnold Palmer, etc. All coolers are checked by badge patrol before you enter the beach! Smoking is also prohibited on Lavallette Beach.
What is excellent about vacationing at Lavallette is that ice cream trucks drive up each block numerous times on the daily during the prime beach season. You always know when the ice cream truck is at the entrance of each beach because they all play music. Most of these trucks have Good Humor products like the Chipwich, Strawberry Shortcake bar and cartoon ice cream bars, but a lot of them also sell Italian ice, açai bowls and “Lava Lemonade.”

Throughout the years, the dining scene in Lavallette has flourished. Since many Italian Americans have been vacationing at the Jersey Shore for years, the town was once flooded with predominately Italian restaurants and pizzerias. Nowadays, you can find different cuisines and eateries from other cultures!

Ohana Grill: If you’re looking for a taste of Hawaii in New Jersey, you must visit Ohana Grill, which is on the border of Lavallette and Ocean Beach, between Bryn Mawr Avenue and East Shore Way on Route 35 North. From huli huli chicken to pan-seared ahi tuna, you cannot go wrong with the meal options at this incredible restaurant.
Sand Dollar Pancake House & Restaurant: There is nothing like eating breakfast outside down the shore. One of the best breakfast spots to fuel up in Lavallette, NJ, is Sand Dollar Pancake House between Jersey City and New Jersey Avenues on Grand Central Avenue. What is excellent about the Sand Dollar is its extensive list of pancakes, omelets and French toasts.
Lenny’s Pizza and Italian Grill: One of the best pizza and Italian restaurants in Lavallette is Lenny’s Pizza between Guyer and Bond Avenues. Pizza with mussels marinara is a favorite meal to enjoy during the summer and Lenny’s has the best!
The Crabs Claw Inn: Situated in the heart of Lavallette, on the corner of Grand Central and President Avenues, The Crabs Claw Inn is one of the oldest and most popular spots to enjoy during summer in Lavallette! From offering fresh seafood to its 99-beer list, this spot is fantastic. If you’re wondering where to go at night in Lavallette, NJ, one of the best things to do is hang out at The Crabs Claw Inn. The restaurant and bar have live music, great co*cktails and a fun ambiance.
Lava Java: For those who love a quaint coffee shop, you must stop at Lava Java between President and Guyer Avenues. You can enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee, cappuccino, espresso, macchiato and a latte at Lava Java, along with freshly baked goods, breakfast sandwiches and salads. What is excellent about Lava Java’s coffee is that it’s 100% locally roasted and you can choose from countless flavors ranging from pumpkin spice to lavender.
Bay View Café: One of the best Lavallette restaurants on the water is Bay View Café on the corner of Reese Avenue and Bay Boulevard. Even though it isn’t entirely on the water, you can enjoy bayside views while savoring a delicious meal. I love going to Bay View Café for breakfast. With a Key West vibe, you must try the key lime French toast!
Castaway’s Pub: Another fun spot to enjoy in the evening in Lavallette is Castaway’s Pub on the corner of Grand Central and Haddonfield Avenues. This American restaurant and bar is excellent for grabbing a burger and a co*cktail while enjoying live music!
Colonial Bakery: Nothing screams summers at the Jersey Shore more than having donuts and coffee for breakfast. The best bakery in Lavallette is Colonial Bakery on the corner between Grand Central and Jersey City Avenues. In addition to great coffee, donuts and muffins, Colonial Bakery has incredible cinnamon bread, maple walnut cake and cupcakes.

Located in Ortley Beach, a gem along the Barnegat Inlet is Barnacle Bill’s. It boasts the best mini golf course, arcade games and beach grill near Lavallette.
One of the best things to do in Lavallette, NJ in the evening is to enjoy a game of mini golf with friends and family, followed by some fun arcade challenges. At the Barrier Grill, you can have soft-served ice cream, burgers, chicken nuggets, French fries and other boardwalk-type food.
Overall, Barnacle Bill’s has been a Jersey Shore staple since 1967. It’s an easy walk over from Lavallette Beach and the iconic Barnacle Bill’s Giant is unmissable. What is remarkable about Barnacle Bill himself is that he is made up of fiberglass and survived Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
In addition to Barnacle Bill’s, Lavallette has a mini golf spot called Lava Golf. It’s located on Grand Central Avenue, between Reese and President Avenues.
Make Memories on the Boardwalk in Seaside Heights or Point Pleasant Beach:
Lavallette is located between Point Pleasant Beach and Seaside Heights – two of the best beaches with boardwalks in New Jersey. One of the best things to do in Jersey during summertime is to visit one of these boardwalks.
During a Lavallette summer vacation, you can easily walk to Seaside Heights’ Casino Pier and haul a ride-sharing service to Point Pleasant Beach’s Jenkinson’s Boardwalk. It’s around a half-hour walk from the heart of Lavallette to Seaside Heights and it’s less than a 10-minute drive. It takes approximately 20 minutes to get from the middle of Lavallette to Point Pleasant Beach.
Seaside Heights’ Casino Pier has rides for all ages to have fun on, from a roller coaster to a Himalaya and a fun house to bumper cars. The Seaside Heights boardwalk also has a lot of great arcade games at places like Lucky Leo’s, Coin Castle and Sonny & Ricky’s.
Admire views of the Seaside boardwalk’s neon lights by riding the sky ride and Ferris wheel at Casino Pier. You can also savor delicious boardwalk food like cheesesteaks or sausage and peppers from Midway Steak House to zeppoles from Three Brothers from Italy.
The best bars and restaurants in Seaside Heights to visit for live music and a good time are Beachcomber Bar & Grill, Hemingway’s Café and Klee’s Bar & Grill.
One of the best things to do in Lavallette, NJ for families is to visit Jenkinson’s Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach. You can enjoy thrilling rides, arcade games, mini golf and more. What is also great about Point Pleasant Beach is that it also boasts Jenkinson’s Aquarium!
The top places to enjoy live music, dancing and a fun atmosphere are Jenks, The Wharfside Seafood & Patio Bar and Amendment 21. Additionally, Hoffman’s Ice Cream is in Point Pleasant beach. It’s famous for being one of the best ice cream shops on the Jersey Shore!
Watch a Magical Sunset on the Barnegat Bay:
What is excellent about Lavallette is that there is also a bay beach. The bayside beaches are lovely to enjoy if you have little ones because the water is calm. Please note that you will need a Lavallette badge to sit on the bay during the day if you and your children are 12 years and older. (There are lifeguards on the bay beaches.)
Additionally, a sticker is required on all cars parked in the bay parking lots. Car stickers are $10 USD per vehicle and can be purchased from the Municipal Building.
Watching a sunset on Barnegat Bay is one of the most magical things to do in Lavallette, NJ, all year round. Located at the Lavallette Gazebo, on the bay, are benches to relax at, along with tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, a jungle gym and a few docks to go fishing and crabbing.
Sunsets on Lavallette Bay are jaw-dropping! Afterward, catch Movies on The Bay or see the epic firework show every 4th of July! Lavallette Founder’s Day also happens every year on the bay. It’s a fun event that always takes place the weekend after Labor Day. You can enjoy live music, carnival rides, local shopping and food trucks at this memorable event.

Do a Hike through Island Beach State Park:
For those who love a great adventure, one of the top things to do in Lavallette, NJ, during your vacation is to explore Island Beach State Park. Located at the southern tip of the Barnegat Peninsula, below Seaside Park and above Long Beach Island, this State Park consists of 10 miles and over 3,000 acres of coastal dunes and incredible biodiversity.
Throughout Island Beach State Park are numerous easy-to-moderate hiking trails to enjoy. A lot of oceanfront trails are short and simple to hike. You can enjoy the beauty of the sand dunes, walk over salt marshes, see freshwater wetland plants and also spot cranberries!
The bayside trails are great for bird watching, fishing and kayaking. Please note that when you visit the bay area of Island Beach State Park, you must bring bug spray. Stroll Along the Lavallette Boardwalk:
What makes Lavallette a great spot for those who are active is the boardwalk. I’ve grown to have a greater appreciation for this boardwalk as it offers over 2.5 miles (round trip) of scenic space for walking, running and bike riding. During the prime summer season, bikes are only allowed on the boardwalk between 5 am and 8 am and then from 5 pm to 8 pm.
From north to south, the Lavallette Boardwalk starts at Ortley Avenue and goes to Dover Avenue. Three more blocks to Lavallette are not on the boardwalk – Bryn Mawr, Haddonfield and Westmont Avenues.
Walking or running on the boardwalk is one of the top things to do in Lavallette, NJ, during the summer. The best times to be on the boardwalk are early morning and later in the evening. Sunday nights are when the boardwalk is quiet compared to Sunday mornings, when it’s the most crowded.
While on the boardwalk, you will walk alongside the beautiful dunes. You can make your way on the ramps overlooking the beach and the Atlantic Ocean and admire beautiful oceanfront homes.
Take a Surfing Lesson:
One of the most fun things to do at the Jersey Shore is to take a surfing lesson! Located in Normandy Beach is Coastline Adventures Surfing School, which is accredited by the National Surf School and Instructor Association. They are the only NSSIA Certified Surf School in Ocean County.
You can take private, semi-private and group surfing lessons through Coastline Adventures Surfing School. There are lessons for all levels too! This awesome company also holds surfing camps, retreats and parties. It’s a great way to develop a new summer hobby and make memories.
Visit Asbury Park and Long Branch:
The popular shore towns of Asbury Park and Long Branch are just a short distance from Lavallette. Recognized as the birthplace of Bruce Springsteen, Asbury Park is one of the most exciting and authentic places to visit in the United States.
After booming in the 1920s and again in the 1950s and 1960s, Asbury Park suffered a long period of economic hardship. However, it started to gain popularity in 2007 and has thrived. Some of the best things to do in Asbury Park are to enjoy the Silverball Retro Arcade, see a performance at the Stone Pony, where Springsteen and Bon Jovi got their start, and visit the restaurants in town.
Located a little north of Asbury Park is Long Branch. It’s a beautiful beach resort that is known for its Pier Village. It’s an upscale and trendy community with a boardwalk, boutique shops, high-end restaurants and luxury oceanfront apartments. The beach at Long Branch is also stunning and includes fun oceanfront bars!
Go to the Waterpark:
For families visiting Lavallette, New Jersey this summer, you must enjoy a day at Breakwater Beach Waterpark in Seaside Heights. Owned by Casino Pier, Breakwater Beach has a wave pool, lazy river, numerous water slides and a children’s area.
Situated next to Breakwater Beach Waterpark is Speedway Go-Karts, where you can race your family and friends. There are a lot of fun times to be had!
Cool off to Ice Cream at The Music Man Singing Ice Cream Shoppe:
Another one of the most memorable things to do in Lavallette, NJ, during summer vacation is to visit The Music Man on Grand Central Avenue between Newark and Trenton Avenues. This vaudeville-style nightly Broadway cabaret is fun for all ages to enjoy.
At The Music Man, you can savor the best ice cream sundaes, sing along to Broadway hits and make memories with your family! You must book a table at The Music Man in advance. In addition to the Lavallette location, you can enjoy this fun show on the Seaside Heights and Point Pleasant boardwalks!
Suppose you prefer to enjoy your ice cream on the go. In that case, Lavallette has other excellent ice cream shops like the famous Kohr’s Frozen Custard, which is on the corner between Grand Central and President Avenues, The Parlor Café Bistro & Creamery (pictured above), which is on the corner of Grand Central and New Jersey Avenues and Iceberg Ice Cream which is between Bond and Guyer Avenues on Grand Central Avenue.
Ride Your Bike through West Point Island:
There is nothing like enjoying a lovely bike ride with an ocean breeze on your face. One of the best Jersey Shore activities in Lavallette is riding your bike along the breathtaking Bay Boulevard and heading to West Point Island.
West Point Island is a little quieter than the rest of Lavallette. It’s an island off the central part of town connected by a small bridge. The most beautiful homes in Lavallette and a private bay beach are on the island. It’s one of my favorite things to do in Lavallette, NJ, over the summer, and the neighborhood is a hidden gem. What is cool about riding through West Point Island is that you will feel like you’re at a New England beach area like Martha’s Vineyard versus the Jersey Shore.

Atlantic City is worth visiting from Lavallette. From the casinos to the nightlife and the restaurants to the boardwalk, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
If you’re making a day trip to Atlantic City from Lavallette, it will take you around an hour to get there. The best things to do during a day trip in Atlantic City are to go parasailing on the Atlantic Ocean; enjoy a beach day; visit the nearby Brigantine Beach, which has quieter beaches and the fun LaScala Beach House; visit a casino; cool off to local craft beer at Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall; taste New Jersey’s craziest and creative pizzas, such as garlic knot pizza and taco pizza, at Tony Baloney’s; have fun on the rides and at the arcade at Steel Pier; go shopping at Tanger Outlets and see a show!

One of the most fun Jersey Shore things to do is to visit The Dock Outfitters in Seaside Heights, where you can rent jet skis, a boat or a pontoon for a half-day or a full day.
A fun place to visit if you have a boat or a jet ski is F Cove. It’s a big party cove on the bay near Toms River and Brick, NJ. Everyone is parked on their boats, having a party, enjoying drinks and listening to good music. It’s a fun place to be on a sunny summer day!
